This is a project funded by the City of Durango Transportation and Sustainability Department and its Parking Division. We will use donated material for the fence posts (train track donated by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGR), meter base receiving tubes and fence rails (used drill pipe donated by BP America - Lower48).
The purpose of this project is to relocate the parking meters and construct/install a fence to clear the sidewalk for pedestrian movements. Project improvements will consist of constructing and installing sections of fence along the 600, 700, 800, combined 900-1000 and the 1100 blocks of Narrow Gauge Avenue in Durango. The Fence is designed to hold parking meters on each post, facing the sidewalk and parking stalls along Narrow Gauge Avenue. There are three horizontal rails and the fence height is designed to put the top of the meter base receiving tube at a height of approximately 31” from the sidewalk surface. Each post will have a meter base receiver tube made of drill pipe attached to the street side (on the rail rolling surface), designed to accept a parking meter housing. The Fence is designed to be placed at the back of the existing sidewalk, using cutouts so that the posts are half in the sidewalk, with the rail rolling surface toward the street, upon completion. The 12 inch supporting rebar reinforced concrete encasements for each post will top out underneath the sidewalk. The sidewalk will be filled in around the base of the post to fill the void created by the saw cut. The drill pipe rails will use a slip joint connection to allow for expansion or contraction of the rails over each section. The posts, rails and receiving tubes will be welded together per the instructions. The rails will have endcaps to close each exposed end of the rails and for the tops of the vertical sections used at the track switch deviation. We expect the meter base tubes to be cleaned internally by the successful bidder to allow easy insertion of the meter housings. The existing meters poles will be removed by the successful bidder during the project and their holes filled. Sign poles in and behind the sidewalk will be removed by the City for work completion, and their holes in the sidewalk will be filled by the successful Bidder. Several additional small repairs and holes filled will be required to finish the sidewalk in a professional manner. Please see plans and specifications
