BACKGROUND:
A major flood event in September 2013 severely impacted Longmont, especially along the St. Vrain Creek. Flooding affected many properties within and outside of the floodplain, damaged infrastructure, and temporarily shut down roads and bridges cutting the City in half. A flood event of this magnitude had not been experienced in Longmont since 1894, and it served as a reminder that the risk of major flood events is real and ever-present. From the disaster comes the opportunity to protect the community while restoring the St. Vrain Creek channel and improving its resilience to future flooding.
The Resilient Saint Vrain Project will restore and revitalize the creek corridor through Longmont. The project is split into two reaches: the City Reach from Left Hand Creek west to Airport Road and the Sandstone Ranch Reach from Boulder Creek to County Line Road. Creek improvements will be completed in phases. Final design is complete for the first two phases: City Reach 1 from Left Hand Creek west to Main Street and the Sandstone Ranch Reach. Construction is anticipated to begin on the first two phases in 2016.
