The U.S. Department of State is supporting the National Civilian Police (PNC)/ K-9 program, under a long-term agreement between both countries to detect, prevent, and mitigate criminal activity in EL Salvador and its effects in both El Salvador and the United States. Part of this agreement consists of modernizing the equipment and technological resources of canine units, through the provision of canines. The National Civilian Police/Antinarcotics Division/ Canine Department (PNC/DAN/K9) currently doubled their number of K9 teams from 18 in April 2021 to 48 presently. So INL in support of the K9 unit expansion is addressing the lack of resources to cover the ports of entry, and providing canines, resources, and training to improve the K9 unit performance, combat TCOs, and improve citizen security.
