Summary of Specifications:
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK - This project on Hollywood Boulevard will commence at the intersection with Hill Avenue and terminate at SR - 293 (Mary Esther cut-off [MEC]) for a total length of 4,278 feet. It was constructed in phases beginning in the 1960’s first as two lane road from MEC to just beyond the current Mall west entrance. In 1980 it was modified from a divided four-lane to the current five lane section just west of the Mall entrance to MEC. In 1993, the intersections of Doolittle and Hill were converted to single lane round-abouts.
The project will replace the various corrugated metal and concrete pipes with concrete pipes. Our records suggest this project was constructed without demucking. Settlement on top of the pipes can partially be attributed to the apparent soils problems. In addition, most of the metal pipes have eroded inverts that water and soil readily transpose creating additional surface problems. We are constructing this work under FAC 62-312.050 that covers the replacement of the same size pipes on the same grade, length, and alignment, and 62-341.447 General Permit to the Florida Department of Transportation, Counties, and Municipalities for Minor Activities Within Existing Rights-of-Way or Easements. Due to the relatively shallow depth the American Concrete Pipe Association recommends improved bedding. We chose to use a #57 stone to provide sufficient bedding and create a work surface for installation. The concrete pipes are designed as heavier sections than normal due to the shallow depths and heavily loaded traffic that use this road to access the adjacent industrial park. The road has not been completely resurfaced since 1980. Of the various repair systems, we chose a leveling and heavy overlay method. In the contract documents the road may not be completely closed except at the intersection of MEC where the pipe straddles the two inbound lanes. Due to the complicated Maintenance of Traffic operations, the contractor will be responsible for the design of the MOT. This will allow flexibility in his planning.
