Specifications include, but are not limited to: Maintenance can be expected to be performed approximately four (4) times per growing season. Prairie maintenance activities that may be directed to be performed during each maintenance sessions are as follows: • Contractors shall start prairie maintenance work at the request of the City. Contractor must be able to respond to requests for services within five (5) days’ notice by the City. • Contractor shall remove all visible invasive or undesirable species during each maintenance session. • to invasive or undesirable species. Over-spray of herbicides will not be tolerated and may result in termination of contract. Contractor shall only use City approved herbicides which includes: o Contractors can use Glysophate or 2-4-D strictly according to manufacturer’s instructions and only during low wind conditions (less than 10 mph). These products have many different trade names. o Triclopyr or Picloram can be used on any woody species. These products have many different trade names. o The invasive weeds that should be pulled by hand are cut-leaf teasel and common teasel if they have developed a seed head. Before seed head development they can be chemically sprayed. • Contractor must take care not to disrupt soil surfaces within prairies. Disturbing soil surfaces will not be tolerated and may result in the termination of contract. • Contractor shall remove waste form invasive species in a timely manner and properly dispose at the landfill or other waste facility. • Contractor shall notify the City of any prairie health concerns that may be discovered during prairie maintenance actives. • Contractor shall pick up and properly dispose of litter removed from site. • Grass will provide habitat and winter interest and shall not be cut in the fall unless directed by the City Project Manager. The last day that the City will direct grasses to be cut shall be October 31st . • Contractor shall cut all remaining prairie to a uniformed height between 4” and 6” during the first maintenance session of the season, if directed. • The City will periodically perform controlled burns in prairie areas. In the event a controlled burn is performed by the City, the area will not need to be moved in the fall or spring. The City will provide the contractor with anticipated burn locations during each growing season. In the event anticipated burns are unable to occur, end or beginning of season mowing will be requested by the City.
