Specifications include, but are not limited to: Pellet salt is to be brine evaporated in pellet form and shall meet or exceed AWWA Standard B200-93, or more current standard if applicable. Include specification sheet and MSDS sheet with bid response. Documentation may be submitted as a bid attachment. Salt used for water softener regeneration must be Pure Rock Salt. It must be clean, white and air-dry, containing no visible foreign matter. It must be not less than 99.00% Sodium Chloride and the impurities in it should not exceed the following values: Calcium: Not more than 0.2%. Magnesium: Not more than 0.1%. Silicon: Not more than 0.1%. When 100 grams of the salt are dissolved in 500 ml distilled water at 60 degrees F., the insoluble matter should not exceed 0.1 grams, which is 0.1 %. The salt must not contain any large lumps or any fine material. Large lumps do not dissolve properly and fine material causes the salt to cake. For these reasons the following limits are placed upon the grain size of the salt: Pure Rock Salt should all pass a 1/4 inch screen with not more than 5% passing through a 20-Mesh U.S. Standard Screen and not more than 1% passing through a 30-Mesh U.S. Standard Screen.
