BRICK PAVERS a. Removal: i. The brick pavers area is to be in accordance with the existing pattern, joints, grade, and crown as to blend in with the adjacent existing brick pavement areas and to provide a uniformly even surface. ii. All existing pavers shall be carefully removed and placed nicely on pallets in a manner to preserve the integrity of the paver. These pavers are to be reused for that jobsite. iii. Reuse only pavers that are in good condition, solid, without being cracked, chipped, or showing any other forms of deterioration. iv. Before existing pavers are reset, they are to be redressed and cleaned to obtain a smooth surface. v. The contractor is required to minimize disturbance or damage to adjacent paver surfaces. vi. Remove 8” of base material to be replaced with 7” of compacted granular base course AB-3 installed in (2) lifts. b. Materials: i. The City of Atchison will provide the contractor with additional pavers in the instance of broken or damaged existing pavers. ii. When leaving the job site, sand shall be covered with a moisture resistant, secured covering to minimize exposure to rainfall or movement wind. c. Installation: i. Before any placement of pavers, the surface of underlying base material should be thoroughly clean and dry, and any isolated high and low spots corrected. A. Weather restrictions: a. Do not install sand or pavers during heavy rainfall or snowfall. b. Do not install bedding sand over frozen base material. ii. Pavers are to be laid on a 1” setting bed of coarse sand. iii. Brick pavers are to be placed by hand on setting material, according to the existing pattern, with straight lines. iv. Pavers are to be tamped and leveled down using a low amplitude, high frequency plate vibrator to vibrate the pavers into the sand. After compaction, the top of the pavers are to be a maximum of 1/8” above finished grade, true to surrounding cross-slope and grade, and free of movement. d. Joint Sanding: i. Before applying joint sand material, the surface of the pavers must be completely dry as moisture will prevent sand from penetrating joints entirely. ii. Cover pavers with dry sand, then sweep joint sand over and into all joints until joints are overfilled. iii. Sweep the entire surface area clean and remove all excel joint sand material.
