A. Materials to be collected “Single Stream Material, Recyclables, or Single Stream” means all accepted materials are mixed together in bins or wheeled carts, with no separation during collection. The program currently operates under the following rules: i. Acceptable materials may be combined in one container but must be placed loose (not bagged). Current acceptable materials include clean and empty: a. Glass 1) Glass food containers including jars and bottles (glassware and food storage containers not acceptable) b. Metal 1) Ferrous and bimetal food containers 2) Aluminum food and beverage cans 3) Aerosol cans (excluding containers that held hazardous waste) c. Plastic 1) Narrow-neck plastic bottles and caps that contained food, drink and household products (milk, juice, cleaning detergent, shampoo/conditioner bottles etc.) 2) Plastic food grade tubs with detached lids (margarine/butter tubs, cottage cheese, yogurt cups, prescription bottles) 3) Plastic pails/ buckets and bulky rigid plastics (ice cream, detergent, kitty litter, storage containers) 4) Plastic flowerpots d. Paper 1) Newspaper (including color insert) 2) Mixed paper (white paper, colored paper, office paper, construction paper, junk mail, magazines, paperboard, envelopes etc.) 3) Books (paperback, textbook, hardback) 4) Cardboard and paperboard boxes 5) Non-metallic wrapping paper 6) Corrugated boxes 7) Gable top cartons; and e. Other materials agreed upon by the City and the Contractor. 1) The City currently maintains a list of acceptable and unacceptable materials for recycling at the following link for reference: https://www.gaithersburgmd.gov/services/recycling-bulk-pick-up. 2) The City recognizes that recycling is a commodity-based business and therefore reserves the right to make amendments to the acceptable material list on a semi-annual basis based on market conditions. The City will inform the Collection Contractor (Category #1)to ensure only appropriate materials are delivered. The City and Collection Contractor will have joint responsibility for informing residents of changes to acceptable materials. ii. Yard Waste materials to be collected by the contactor shall be separately collected and shall not be mixed with the single stream recycling. These Yard Waste materials include: a. Brush b. Branches (no more than four inches in diameter and six feet in length) c. Bare Christmas Trees (no ornamental trimmings) from December 26 – March 1 d. Other yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, weeds, vines, etc.) iii. The Contractor shall pay for the disposal of Yard Waste. Under the City’s current contract, Yard Waste is being dropped off at the Shady Grove Transfer Station located at 16101 Frederick Rd., Derwood, MD 20855, at a cost of $46.00 per ton as of the date of this RFP. The Contractor may dispose of Yard Waste at any certified composting facility.
