Specifications include, but are not limited to:A. Academic Content: Stenographers or CART providers must have the appropriate dictionaries and skills to write college academic content ranging from undergraduate level to graduate, PhD, and professional level content and language proficiency, including STEM courses, law, music, and medical education (Veterinary Medicine, Osteopathic, Human Medicine, Nursing, Physician Assistant, Pharmacology, and Laboratory Technology). B. Synchronous/Consecutive: CART providers must be able to provide captions synchronously or consecutively depending on the environment and needs of the student and academic staff. C. Effective: CART providers must be able to write a lecture, dialogue, question, or request clearly, accurately, and strive for verbatim without paraphrasing as it relates to the subject (no TypeWell). D. Intent: Write the dialogue verbatim and convey the intent of the original speaker, including idioms and slang. E. Communication: The ability to communicate across cultures, content, and topics in a variety of settings with a variety of speakers. Communicating verbally a deaf student’s writings/responses if the student cannot verbalize. F. Fluency: A CART provider must have native-level proficiency in English and the ability to write steno. G. Technological proficiency: Familiarity with digital communication avenues, including live chat, email, and text. H. Sufficient education: NCRA certified is desired (CRR or CRC) or equivalent experience.
