Stands 48 & 64 / VDU's 48 & 64 (Single Tree Selection) - Mark stands for crop tree release. Reduce basal area to 80. Remove most remaining beech, leaving some left standing as future snags. Remove most poorly formed first, then target oversized red maple trees as needed. See Complete DNR marking guidelines for guidance. Stand 48 / VDU 22 (Clearcut & Regeneration Gaps) - Cut all stems within harvest pockets, regardless of merchantability. No trees will need to marked within these regeneration gaps. Stand 68 / VDU 68 (Crown Thinning) - Mark stand for crop tree release removing poor quality and oversized trees. Reduce basal area to 80. Some areas are heavier to red maple and cherry with more oversized stems. Focus on removing largest stems and lower quality stems in these areas. It will be difficult to find crop trees to keep in these areas. Other areas are heavier to sugar maple which would benefit from crop tree release. Do not cut well-formed sugar maple just to bring basal area down. There should be enough poor-quality trees to meet basal area goals in most areas. Keep yellow birch and most basswood unless diseased or in very poor form. See Complete DNR marking guidelines for guidance. *Note any ironwood can be spec cut from all stands and does not need to be marked. Do not mark to cut any obvious wildlife or "legacy" trees in any stands.
