Specifications include, but are not limited to: MnDOT requests responses for a Clear Roads synthesis report that explores the issues transportation agencies with winter maintenance programs should consider before converting an existing diesel-fueled winter maintenance fleet to one powered by electric vehicle technologies (EVT) or alternative fuels. As renewable energy becomes more costeffective and commonplace, agencies may choose to begin replacing their winter maintenance vehicles and equipment with a fleet that has a smaller carbon footprint. A review of EVT and viable fuel alternatives, which could include biodiesel, natural gas, and others, as well as the benefits and challenges each provides and an examination of the specific issues a winter maintenance operation should consider, will help agencies better understand their options. Such issues to consider could include vehicle engine power and endurance, equipment and component durability, garage facility adaptations, charging or refueling needs, vehicle downtime during refueling, maintenance requirements, mechanic training and environmental impacts.
