Specifications include, but are not limited to: This project will focus on two primary efforts: 1. To analyze and make comparisons regarding the impacts of different materials including chlorides and alternative products, such as abrasives (i.e. winter sand) and liquid or flake non-chloride products such as acetates, formates, glycerols, and various organic by-products. The results will help states make informed decisions about policies for responding to snow and ice events effectively, while still minimizing environmental impacts from such activities. 2. To compile the material information from above with the research results of Clear Roads, its member states, and other entities as applicable (e.g. The Salt Institute, the American Public Works Association (APWA), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the New Hampshire Stormwater Center, DOT Research Departments, etc.) to capture the current environmental best practices for using chlorides in a responsible and affordable snow and ice control program.
