The Charter Township of Independence is located in Northern Oakland County along the I-75 corridor. It encompasses a thirty six-mile by thirty six-mile area, surrounding the City of the Village of Clarkston, and has a population of approximately 37,000 citizens. The Township is characterized by relatively lower-density residential development in its northern portion and higher density residential with commercial development in its southern portion, predominantly along main corridors. It is one of the larger townships in Michigan, having a significant Parks, Recreation, and Seniors
Department, a DPW which provides public water and sewer services in the southern portion of the community, an in-house Assessing Department, a Planning and Zoning Department, a Building Department, Fire and EMS services provided by full-time professional firefighters, and Police service provided by contract with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department. The Township has in place contracts for legal services which are now-expiring with regard to general legal, labor and employment, prosecutions, and tax assessing support.
