Removal, Repair or Replacement of the
Hawk Woods Park Marsh Boardwalk

May 6, 2021: The City of Auburn Hills is seeking proposals for the removal, repair or replacement of the north portion of the Hawk Woods Park Marsh Boardwalk.

Background
The Hawk Woods Park is a municipal park located at 3799 Bald Mountain Road, Auburn Hills MI 48326. It is an 80 acre park featuring a lodge, 5 cabins, a gazebo, walking trails and a lush forest environment. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and there is no vehicle entry fee or permit needed.

The Marsh Boardwalk is located along the west end of the park property. There is an observation deck located along the Pond Loop Trail which serves as the main access point to the boardwalk. The portion of the boardwalk that runs to the north of the observation platform has deteriorated and is closed to the public indefinitely. This portion is approximately 1,000 feet in length and is believed to have been constructed by volunteers in the 1990’s or early 2000’s.

Removal of the Boardwalk
City staff believes that the boardwalk is most likely beyond repair and is seeking quotes from experienced firms to remove the north portion of the boardwalk as indicated. Interested contractors should include with their proposal an outline of how they intend to accomplish the work. Contractors should utilize methods which would minimize the impact on the park, for example, tree removals would be strongly discouraged.

Repair of the Boardwalk
While the City staff believes the boardwalk is beyond repair, should an interested contractor assess it and determine that repair is possible, the City would be interested in an estimate to do so.

Replacement of the Boardwalk
The City would be interested in any proposal, budget estimate or quote to replace the boardwalk.

Site Visit
A City representative will host a walking tour of the site for any interested contractors on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 1:00 pm. The boardwalk is currently closed and any site visit other than the one scheduled should be arranged by appointment. Extreme caution should be used when walking on the boardwalk as the surface is unstable and in disrepair.

Proposal Submittal
Interested contractors shall include with their submittal sufficient information demonstrating that they are a well established firm experienced in the kind of work described. A list of relevant projects with dates and references should be included with the submittal. Please include biographical information about the firm, its principles and any applicable tools, equipment, training, personnel, and experience. Any contract, if awarded, would require acceptance of the City’s insurance requirements and Terms & Conditions (attached).
