Background
The County of Oakland has owned 40 acres of land at 1700 Brown Road for over 40 years. The property was used for two purposes – an Animal Shelter and housing for low-risk inmates of the County’s jail system. During the Great Recession, the inmates were transferred to the main jail on the County’s campus in Pontiac to reduce operating costs. Further, plans were initiated to build a new, state of the art Animal Shelter. Two years ago, the new shelter opened. It, too, is on the County’s campus in Pontiac. Thus, the 1700 Brown Road property is no longer being used for County business and it was rezoned to light industrial and listed for sale. The asking price as of November 2020, was $3.9 million. In accordance to Board of Commissioners guidelines, a public sale of the property is now being conducted.
