Scratch courses will be used when the deviations in the existing pavement are less than 1” deep. Scratch courses do not have a constant thickness. The term "Scratch Course" comes from the method of placement of this item. The paving equipment is set to drag on or “scratch” the high areas of the existing pavement, only depositing material in the low areas, thereby creating a smooth surface on which to place the next layer of asphalt pavement.; Scratch Course shall be placed: • If the wearing overlay is the first overlay on an existing Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP),; • If previous asphalt pavement overlays are milled deep enough to expose the PCCP, or; • On any other surface to be further paved as prescribed by the Owner or their representative
