DIMENSIONS: Poles shall be purchased in ANSI classes if not otherwise specified.; 3.2. DENSITY: Density shall be measured at the butt in accordance with Standard Regional Association Grading Rules for lumber, except that the measurement to determine the density shall be made on the outer three inches of the butt surface and that the number of annual rings shall not be less than six to the inch or over the measured surface. An exception to ring count and its associated alternate measurement is permitted when used as described in the ANSI specifications when measuring density.; 3.3. SHAPE: any localized deviation from straightness in a five foot section or less, shall be classified as short crook and the deviation from straightness shall not exceed two (2) inches.; A pole may have sweep, subject to the following limitations: (a) Where sweep is in one plane in one direction only, a straight line connecting the center of the butt with the center of the top shall not at any intermediate point pass through the external surface of the pole.; (b) Where sweep is in two planes, or in two directions in one plane, a straight line connecting the center of the butt with the center of the top shall not deviate from the centerline of the pole more than one-fourth diameter of the pole at the point of widest deviation.; 3.4. KNOTS: Knots of questionable character indicating possible decay shall be neatly gouged to a depth of not more than one-fifth the diameter of the pole at the point where the knot is located, to permit determination of character and extent of the decay. The gouging shall be done without unnecessary removal of sound wood and in such a manner as to insure drainage of water from the hole when the pole is set. ; 3.5. SCARS: Scars are permitted as defined in ANSI provided that depth of the trimmed scar is not more than one inch if the diameter of the pole is ten inches or less or one-tenth of the pole diameter at the location of the scar, if such diameter is more than ten inches.
