The MagPlex microspheres are the only type of microsphere that are compatible with serological assay we use to quantify antibodies for up to 40 different disease targets for use in public health surveillance. They are specially dyed to de detectible by specific readers and re the basis for multiplex assays based on Luminex’s Xmap technology. Luminex is the only manufacturer of these beads and can provide them at the scale needed for the current purchase. If we change bead products, we will be unable to compare results of future studies with pat studies (unless every previous study was repeated with new beads, an in most cases there is not sufficient sample left to retest, nor enough labor), something that is integral to our laboratory deliverables. After research into alternatives, we are not aware of any other available products conducive to replacing the current bead supply in our assay.
