Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Missoula City-County Animal Control program, part of the Environmental Health Division of Missoula Public Health, is planning to expand and renovate the animal shelter at 6400 Butler Creek Rd. The project addresses three critical needs: inadequate animal housing, public spaces, and staff workspace. Currently, the dog kennels and cat cages do not meet industry standards. The project will provide all dogs and cats with double-sided housing, and we will house fewer animals in each room. These measures decrease animal stress and sickness and increase staff and animal safety. We are adding a room dedicated to small animals, like rabbits, gerbils, birds and reptiles – right now these animals are housed in the lobby and in workspaces. A larger lobby will be built, along with new rooms for people to meet with animals they may want to adopt. Staff space will be expanded to include a separate Animal Control Officer office, a combination break and meeting room, and a larger and better-outfitted surgery. This project also provides an opportunity to make the shelter more energy efficient and sustainable in line with Missoula County’s carbon neutrality goal.
