Specifications include, but are not limited to: 3.1 Design: As part of the RFP response, the Contractor will include a design of the proposed bicycle friendly grate replacement. The grate will be designed to fit on the existing Type D frames, conforming to the frame and exterior grate dimensions as shown below. The following depicts the existing Type D frame and grate assembly The grates will be designed so that the dominating dimension of the openings is perpendicular to the direction of travel. Grate size will provide similar hydraulic capacity as the existing grate design shown above. Design load for the grate will meet the requirements of AASHTO HL-93. The Contractor will submit a written narrative with the design, explaining how the design is a more bicycle friendly design than the existing grates depicted above. The design will be reviewed for acceptance by SDDOT engineering staff.
