The ratio of Yucca or Sotol fiber to broom corn hurl shall be 80% to 20% by volume. The finished broom shall have a combed appearance and be free of seeds and foreign matter. Body – Body of the broom shall be fan-shaped. The brooms body shall be tightly stitched using polypropylene twine. Twenty (20) pound brooms shall be sewn four times. Brooms of 24 pounds or more shall be sewn five times. The length of the body from the neck to the sweep shall be: Heavy Weight – 19”, Light Weight 15 ½” Handle – The handle shall be straight, grained, clear, thoroughly seasoned wood, free from knots, splinters, and other imperfections. It shall be smoothly sanded and shall include a smooth, rounded top end. It shall be coated with at least one coat of clear lacquer. The total length of the handle shall be 42 inches long and extend into the broom approximately four (4) inches. Hardwoods such as Ramin American, Southern Pine, or Honduras Pine are acceptable. Light Weight Broom 7/8 inches diameter. Wire: Tinned Steel wire not less than 0.040 inches in diameter shall be used for fastening the body and the neck to the handle. Brooms of the 32-pound type and lighter shall be fastened with the wire running down to the handle. Velvet cloth is not required. Weight: Referenced weight shall be dry weight. No more than a 10% variance shall be allowed per broom. CU-021. BROOM – ANGLED PLASTIC/POLYPROPYLENE BRISTLES - Broom should have a handle that is of wood or other sturdy material. Should not bend or bold with regular use. Broom will also be used on buses so handle should be fairly, heavy duty. BROOM SHOULD BE OF TOP QUALITY.
