Specifications include, but are not limited to: 2 Pair Automated FLagger Assistance Devices (AFAD) This specification describes 2 pair of solar charged Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFADs) consisting of two radio-controlled trailer-mounted units, each with 12” LED red/amber signal heads. Each AFAD unit shall also display a retroreflective “STOP HERE ON RED” sign. A gate arm on each unit can simultaneously block the lane of traffic it controls when the red stop signal is displayed. The remote control handheld wireless transceiver shall allow the operation of both devices to be controlled and monitored via radio signals by a single operator at a remote location. A warning horn with a minimum of 125 dB sound level, activated remotely by the handheld transceiver operator or by a motorist striking the gate arm, shall be mounted on each trailer to warn of vehicle intrusion into the work space. Two remote control handheld wireless transceivers shall be supplied with each pair of AFADs, and the two AFAD units shall be capable of operating either in conjunction with each other by a single remote control handheld wireless transceiver at a single work site, or separately and independently of each other at separate work sites by separate operators with each remote control handheld wireless transceiver. The AFAD shall be in conformance with the latest edition of the MUTCD and in compliance with NCHRP 350 crash testing requirements.
