At the University of Georgia’s Health Sciences Campus (HSC), the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership has a current class size of 60 and medical education primarily occurs in Russell Hall with large meetings held at George Hall. The project goals are to increase the medical education facilities to support a future UGA School of Medicine class size of 120 and to establish School of Medicine BSL-2 research space. A new approximately 92,000 gsf education and research facility will be constructed at the Health Sciences Campus, of which approximately 25,000 gsf will be allocated to research. The research area will be BSL-2 open wet lab space with support rooms. The Using Agency is in the process of conducting a new high-level comprehensive programming exercise for the new facility as well as existing program spaces in Russell and George Halls. After the programming and concept design is complete, design professional will continue with design for the new facility. Spaces for the new facility are envisioned to include large and small group learning, additional simulations suites with clinical skills lab, a second gross anatomy lab, and medical library, student lounge, standardized patient rooms, conference rooms of varying sizes, along with faculty and administrative office spaces necessary for student support. An energy model will be included in the design professional’s scope of services and will be utilized by the project team as a concept/basis of design to inform building envelope and building system decisions.
