Specifications include, but are not limited to: Cutting: ALL standing live juniper trees (identified as single stemmed trees measuring less than 12 inches diameter at root collar or multi-stemmed trees measuring less than 28 inches diameter at ground level) and saplings are to be removed by hand (lop and scatter), completely severed from the stump with a stump height not to exceed 6 inches measured from the uphill side. All main branches or stems shall be cut from the trunk of the tree to meet scattering requirements. No live limbs shall be left on the stump of cut trees. The cut juniper slash will be scattered to avoid dense concentrations. Slash must be scattered so that all remaining materials are less than 2 feet tall measured from the ground. Cut material left on site shall not exceed 48 inches in length. Trees identified as having old-growth characteristics, bearing trees, or any tree blazed or tagged to mark the line of any Government survey, shall not be cut or destroyed under penalty of the law. Pinyon pine trees are not known within the project area, but if found will not be cut. Most of treatment units occur in areas that were previously masticated so there will be a combination of cutting regrowth of small juniper less than 6 feet tall and larger trees that fall within the description above.
