MHCC’s Construction Pathway for English Language Learners (CPELL) is seeking a Construction expert to consult with program staff on a variety of program components and to train English language learner pre-apprenticeship participants in basic construction skills necessary to enter a registered trades apprenticeship program and do commercial and residential construction. The carpentry consultant will participate in and provide subject-matter expertise for training program planning and implementation, work with CPELL instructors to draft formal curriculum modules, and engage and develop local construction industry pre-RAP, RAP and employer partnerships. The carpentry trainer will provide class instruction, hands-on training activities, certification trainings and orientations, use and modify the Career Connections and CPELL curriculum, and contribute to the overall program training as needed to meet trainee and program needs. A successful candidate will have local, East-Multnomah County and Portland-area experience and leadership in the construction training industry, a passion for advancing opportunities for English language learners, extensive knowledge of Career Connections construction curriculum, and experience with pre-RAP and RAP program development and continuous improvement. The candidate must be able to educate, motivate, and inspire trainees who are English Language Learners. Scope of Services - Logistics and Planning: attend pre-training planning meetings, set up career connections curriculum access and licenses, set up and coordinate certification training components (including Career Safe OSHA course, CPR/First Aid, rental of equipment for boom/scissor/forklifts), complete lesson preparation, inventory and organize tools, prepare the training classroom and shop, and participate in CPELL student orientation activities and meetings. Up to 50 hours in January and June. - Training: Deliver trades-specific courses and workshops for English language learners from Career Connections and other CPELL-specific curriculum. This includes teamteaching with an ESL instructor, construction theory and hands-on projects, and OSHA 10 safety training. The trainer will provide Qualification orientations that comply with OSHA standards, in PITO (Power Industrial Truck Operations), and MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) operation. 40-50 days over 11 weeks (average 25.5 training hours/week). 255 hours February-April, 2025 and up to 50 hours in June, 2025.
