SD-VDRS Injury Prevention Data Abstractor Duties • Perform timely data abstraction from death certificates, coroner reports, autopsies, and law enforcement reports for violent deaths that occur statewide. • Perform record/case linkages for violent deaths. • Perform manual data entry of case information into the web-based National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). • Participate in quality assurance and data validation to ensure timely data collection. • Develop, maintain, and manage professional relationships with data providers. • Complete required training of the NVDRS web-based system and coding manual. • Collect, abstract, and enter data of unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths, as part of the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System for the state of SD. This data is also entered into the NVDRS web-based system. • Participate on the SD-VDRS Advisory Committee. Skills Needed: • Ability to operate a computer, databases, and Microsoft Office programs • Need excellent oral and written communication skills • Knowledge of computer data management and data collection processes • Needs to have good time management, organization skills, ability to work independently, and attention to detail is important • Must be sensitive to issues of confidentiality, comply with HIPPA and other data regulations • Needs to be comfortable working with violent death data; such as reading detailed coroner reports, law enforcement reports, suicide notes, etc.
