The purpose of the Disability Culture Community Building Project is to explore the meaning of disability culture with people with disabilities, ages 18 and older; provide listening sessions regarding mental health, to reduce stigma regarding mental health and support increased access to mental health. The population of focus includes people with blindness/vision impairment; deafness/hearing impairment; physical disabilities; intellectual/developmental disabilities; psychiatric disabilities; learning disabilities; autism spectrum disorder; and/or other disabilities, which may be apparent or nonapparent. Los Angeles County needs assessment data indicating that people with disabilities often experience transportation, childcare, and financial barriers to participating in mental health programs. This project aims to increase access and reduce barriers to participating in group mental wellness activities, create a safe space to share ideas, and experience disability culture in community.
