Excavation 3.3.1 The Contractor shall: 3.3.1.1 Excavate by hand where space, access, or existing utilities will not permit the use of machines. 3.3.1.2 Remove loose material and free water from bottom of excavations. 3.3.1.3 Keep all excavated materials an acceptable distance away from each open excavation. 3.3.2 Contractor may stockpile clean fill material suitable for re-use where directed by LES. 3.3.3 Excess and unsuitable fill material shall be hauled from site by the Contractor at no additional expense to LES. 3.4 Reinforcing Steel 3.4.1 Reinforcement shall be free of mud, oil, other surface contamination, and excessive corrosion at the time of concrete placement. 3.4.2 Place steel reinforcement according to project drawings and in accordance with ACI 318 and Manual of Standard Practice of CRSI. 3.4.3 Reinforcement cover shall not be less than 3 inches where exposed to soil. 3.4.4 Steel reinforcement shall be placed and secured prior to pouring concrete. 3.5 Concrete 3.5.1 Dewater excavations before placing concrete. Dewater in a manner that will not create subsidence or ground loss that might adversely affect the work or existing structures. 3.5.2 If water inflow or sidewall instability encountered exceeds an amount acceptable to the LES project inspector, alternative means will need to be used to complete the work.
