All animal food must meet the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards/requirements. 25.4.1. Product labels must include an ingredient list, a list of preservatives, feeding guidelines, and meet the AAFCO standards. AAFCO standards include: product name, net weight, name and address of the producer, guaranteed analysis, the words dog food or cat food (for dog or cat food), a statement of nutritional adequacy, and a statement of the methods used for substantiating nutritional adequacy. 25.4.2. An AAFCO statement that identifies the following: a. Whether the food is complete and balanced b. Which stage the animal food is intended for c. Substantiation that the animal food is complete and balanced by either of the following: i. Analysis using laboratory or computer based models ii. Using feed protocols 25.4.3. Dog and cat food labels must indicate formulated feed is for the indicated maintenance stage of the animal’s life. 25.4.4. Ingredient list must identify meat as first ingredient. 25.4.5. Guaranteed analysis must list the following: a. Crude protein at a minimum of 18% b. Crude fat at a minimum of 5% c. Calcium at a range of 0.6% - 2.5%, and d. Phosphorus at a range of 0.5% - 1.6% 25.4.6. Other nutrient requirements for adult maintenance stage of dog and cat food must be listed on label. 25.4.7. Animal food shall be readily available for the public to purchase in the community at locations such as large chain pet supply stores. Product must be available at no fewer than six (6) retail locations within the Consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County and adjacent counties.
