The Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA) operates a fleet of buses used to transport students, age 16-19, and adults. Team Leaders at AMYA are responsible for the operation of these buses. It is required that new Team Leaders obtain their CDL within 90 days of hire. On February 7, 2022, the Entry-Level Driver Training regulations changed, and now formalized training is required. With about a 30 percent turnover rate of Team Leaders each year, AMYA expects to send approximately 10 to 12 new Team Leaders to Entry Level Drivers Training throughout the year. 1. Theory Training – Topics include: • Basic Operation • Safe Operating Procedures • Advanced Operation Procedures • Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions • Non-Driving Activities (e.g. hours of service) And 2. Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training: • Actual operation of a school bus taking place on a range or public road. Training needs to cover basic vehicle control skills and mastery of maneuvers. This training can take place at the Contractors site or at the AMYA campus.
