Typical duties of the advocate(s) assigned to the Sex Crimes Unit will include: • Contacting victims listed in sexual assault related police reports to: • Offer support during the investigation and prosecution of the criminal case; • Explain the process by which criminal cases are investigated and prosecuted; • Safety Planning with victim(s) • Offer referrals for confidential advocacy services and/or support groups; • Offering full-time advocacy services to MPD investigators to provide advocacy support as needed to sexual assault survivors and to support investigators conducting interviews with victims • When requested, go with investigators when they conduct in-person or home visits to interview victims on cases; • Offer other support in the sex crimes unit to enhance the understanding and investigation of sexual assault cases; • Collaborate with the MPD, Minneapolis City Attorney and Hennepin County Attorney’s Offices. • The advocate coordinates with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to ensure a smooth transition when cases are submitted, and a county advocate may get involved on the prosecution end. • Make confidential calls to victims so they cannot be subpoenaed to provide testimony protecting the victim • Calls to victims when a case cannot be investigated or charged to assist with resources. They can connect victims with therapy, housing, phones, clothing, and any other resources that may be needed. • Meet with victims who need to file a report but need support with them due to trauma from an assault • Able to meet with victims at hospitals for support and assist coordinating SARS exams • Advocate supervisor checks in with MPD Sex Crimes supervisor every 2-3 weeks for up to date information
