The dredging project is located in the City of North Myrtle Beach, SC, approximately 1.5 miles northward from the terminus of SC Hwy. 9 at Cherry Grove Beach. Specifically, the project involves hydraulic dredging of the Access Canals and a large portion of what is referred to as the Minor Channel. Approximately 140,000 CY of material will be dredged from the man-made canals and channel. A combined total of approximately 26,000 LF of Minor Channel and Access Canals will be dredged for this project. Material shall be removed by hydraulic dredge and pumped to the Horry County-owned Tidewater Disposal Basin (Disposal Area 320), located near Tidewater Plantation on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Generally, the width of the dredge path for the Minor Channel shall be dredged to a width of 34 feet and to a depth of -3.0 ft. Mean Low Water (MLW) and the width of the dredge path for the Access Canals will be dredged to a width of 24 feet wide to a depth of -3 ft. MLW for approx. 2/3rd of their length and to -2.5 ft. MLW for the remaining 1/3rd of their length. A one-foot (1-ft.) over-dredge depth will be allowed throughout the project. In some areas, it may be possible to perform dredging excavation with vertical dredge cuts and anticipate that side slopes will naturalize to approximately 4(h):1(v). However, the dredging contractor should plan for possibly needing to bench- cut along the sides of the canals in order to help ensure that the establishment of the allowable 4(h): 1
(v) sideslopes are achieved throughout. Some variations in channel / canal layout and width may be required throughout the project to accommodate existing structures and/or to avoid impacts to marsh grass, oyster beds, and other features.
