East Columbia, within Maury County Census Tract 105, is a historically underserved community with high levels of social vulnerability and preventable disease. The community is in the 79th percentile for socioeconomic vulnerability and the 93rd percentile for household composition and disability vulnerability. Data from the Centers for Disease Control CDC indicate that residents of East Columbia have elevated levels of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure when compared to the broader community. The same data indicate that levels of physical inactivity are higher in east Columbia than in the broader community. One factor in the persistence of this disparate health situation is the physical and social separation of east Columbia from the rest of the Columbia and Maury County. The subarea plan will identify projects necessary to implement the City’s comprehensive plan within East Columbia, with a special emphasis on these public health challenges.
