Licensed and certified veterinarian(s) may be required to provide medical services and medicine necessary for the medical care of animals in the care and custody of the Suffolk Animal Care , Police K-9 Unit, and Suffolk Fire Marshal’s K-9 Unit. If supplies or equipment are needed, the City would like them provided at a fixed price. Veterinarian(s) should address their ability to provide services to include, but not limited to the following: Willing and able to provide credible testimony in a court of law on cases involving cruelty to animals and other similar charges. Carry out the duties of the profession in the highest professional manner. Ensure that the quality and proper treatment of the animals is a priority. Possess and maintain all required licenses and certifications for their professional staff. Be knowledgeable of, and perform services in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local animal laws and regulations. Provide preliminary examinations and shots as requested. Provide x-ray/ultrasound facilities at your office/clinic. Provide and/or dispense prescriptions and non-prescription medications and be familiar with shelter medicine practices. Provide necessary minor surgery and suturing at the veterinarian’s office/clinic. Provide major surgery on site at the veterinarian’s office/clinic or assist in making arrangements for its performance elsewhere with permission of the Animal Shelter Manager, Police Canine Supervision, or Fire Canine Supervision, respectfully. Provide laboratory services. Provide a minimum of two (2) veterinarians on staff, with at least one (1) available during all office hours, Monday through Friday. Provide an on-call veterinarian for critical incidents for dogs/cats picked up with critical injuries. Provide overnight hospitalization if needed.
