GENERAL INFORMATION

The City of Ann Arbor is interested in having a solar water heating system installed at Fire Station #1, located at 111 N. Fifth Ave in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is the main fire station and houses 7-8 fire fighting staff on a 24 hr basis as well as Fire Department administration, an additional 12 people Monday-Friday 8:00 – 5:00. Warm water is used to wash the fire trucks, which usually occurs in the morning from 8:00 – 10:00am. The crew takes showers occasionally throughout the day and especially after returning from a fire. Water heating load is estimated at 200 gallons/day based on summertime natural gas and is currently provided by a natural gas fired water heater. The solar water heating system will be installed as a pre-heater for the existing water heater. All piping should be insulated.
