2024-006 - Polystyrene Densifier

The City of East Lansing seeks to purchase and install a polystyrene densifier/compactor at its Department of Public Works and Environmental Services facility to process common household polystyrene materials (cups, coolers, food service containers, etc.). The City currently collects roughly 10 tons of polystyrene a year and seeks proposals for equipment that will allow the City to densify/compact this material volume in-house to prepare for resale or disposal.

Specifications:
 

1. Recycle Tech Model XT-200, XT-200e, XT-300, or similar. It is not required to be this brand.
2. Types of foam that can be densified: EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), EPE (Expanded Polyethylene), and EPP (Expanded Polypropylene).
3. Size: Prefer smaller size. Roughly 8’(L) x 5’ (W) x 5’ (H) maximum.
4. Operating Conditions: Machine placement will be indoors but in an open-door storage facility. Must be able to operate in variable temperatures.
5. There must be no limitations on vendor(s) that the City can use for disposal for the densified product.
6. If a heat densifier, ability to meet Minor Source or Exempt status under Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Air Quality Division permitting. Must be able to vent exhaust fumes outdoors and include an hour-meter to report run times.
7. Include installation costs.
8. Training: Include cost of training 3-4 public service employees upon installation.
9. Warranty: At least a full one-year warranty  
10. Delivery: Within 30 days or less of the purchase order issuance.
