Background and Scope of Work
Since the Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center opened in 1991, it has offered Washtenaw County residents diverse programming and recreation opportunities. The center is located on the east side of Ann Arbor, has approximately 51,000 square feet of space dedicated to fitness and recreation and hosts approximately 400,000 visits annually.
The building includes a gymnasium that offers basketball, pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and youth sports as well as occasional special events; an exercise studio that offers approximately 50 classes per week that range from Tai Chi to studio cycling and Zumba; a 4-lane lap pool that offers lap swimming, aquatic classes, swim lessons and family fun nights; additional office space for staff, and flexible space for programming. A weekly summer day camp of approximately 70 kids are also hosted at MLM Rec Center. The building features open spaces and lots of natural light to create a healthy environment where visitors can achieve their fitness goals. The building is shut down for 2 weeks in late August for regular repairs and maintenance.
Recreation needs and interests in the community have changed since MLM Rec Center opened in 1991. Therefore, WCPARC is interested in consulting with a firm to identify ways to update the building, expand the offerings to the community and utilize space in the center more efficiently.
