The Washtenaw County Juvenile Drug Treatment Court (JDTC) seeks to utilize an integrated, trauma focused, evidenced-based approach in the treatment of adolescents using and abusing substances, who may have co-occurring internalizing disorders. Utilizing an equity focused, collaborative team-based approach, we strive to holistically serve participant youths and families through co-occurring/dual diagnosis and high need trauma-based services.
“Substance use and abuse are common problems among clinically-presenting adolescents, especially those with a significant history of trauma” (Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse Committee, National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2008). Although there are multiple evidence-based therapies to address trauma, research and clinical experience reflects that trauma therapy should be adapted and adjusted to the specific issues and needs of substance involved youth. (Briere and Lanktree, 2014). JDTC data reflects that the substance use treatment provider will work with adolescents from diverse backgrounds; many of whom have varied risk factors, including trauma exposure that impacts their response to treatment.
Although the JDTC has been successful in serving youth and families since 2005, the JDTC Team is aiming to work with a provider in making the program more integrative by focusing on trauma, mental health, and SUD (Substance Use Disorder) and by collaborating with community partners.
