Albany is a City of nearly 22 square miles that serves as the Capital of New York State. Just under a 100,000 people call it home. The City of Albany (or, the “City”) maintains 266.7 miles of paved roadways. Along these streets, and in adjoining rights-of-way, stand thousands of public trees. The City seeks an outside consultant/contractor to inventory these trees. Best estimates put the number of trees, stumps, and planting sites at around 20,000 across the City. This inventory will focus on street trees and stumps throughout the City and vacant planting sites in sidewalk “tree pits.”

The overall goal of this project is to determine the types, quantities, location, and health of the trees in the City of Albany’s urban forest; and to develop a management plan. These tools will allow the City to better manage its urban forest, while also making clear the value to be found in protecting and enhancing the City forest resources. A healthy urban forest provides for better air quality, reduces the heat index, reduces noise, slows and filters storm water, increases property values, and visually enhances our streets. The City proposes to hire a firm that will use ISA-certified arborists to conduct a Geographic Information System (hereinafter referred to as “GIS”) street tree inventory.

The City of Albany has been designated a Tree City USA since 2002, and is a four-time recipient of a Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation.
