This award may be made on a sole source basis in accordance with the Rockland County Procurement Policy.
TERM: January 1, 2021- December 31, 2021
SCOPE
The Rockland County Department of Mental Health is looking to procure services for the provision of a 1-1 community mentoring program for youth. According to the Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring, evaluations of youth mentoring programs have provided evidence that high-quality, enduring relationships can lead to a range of positive outcomes for the young people involved. Studies have shown that mentoring has a significant positive effect on school attendance, attitude towards school and the likelihood of enrolling in college. Another study showed the strongest benefit from mentoring, and most consistent across risk groups, was a reduction in drepressive symptoms. By being a consistent adult presence in a young person’s life, mentors can offer advice, share life their experiences, and help a young person navigate challenges. In fact, it has been shown that youth who meet regularly with their mentos are less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs or alcohol.
Program Goals and Services include, but are not limited to:
- Helping youth to recognize their qualities, values, interests and skills and how to nurture their potential;
- Avoiding delinquency and remaining in school;
- Avoiding criminal activities, drug/alcohol usage and street gang involvement;
- School success;
- Positive family interaction;
- Ensuring that children are safe, protected and enjoy contact with a long-term absent parent.
- Mentors will meet with their mentees a minimum of four (4) hours each month and participate in various recreational and cultural activities.
Unduplicated number of children/youths to be served in Mentoring Program is estimated at 100 for 2021.
