Summary of Specifications:
PROJECT SUMMARY Through the Capital District Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), Schenectady County has received federal highway funds to reconstruct the Mohawk Hudson Bike trail crossing of State Rt. 5S in the Town of Rotterdam (see attached location map). The design of the project is now eligible to be advanced with construction scheduled for Federal Fiscal Year 2013-14.
This location is a safety concern for trail users. The crossing is at a skewed angle and traffic speeds and heavy truck traffic are an issue. The approach to 5S on the Trail could provide better warning of the crossing to cyclists. Likewise, better warning of the crossing could be provided to approaching vehicular traffic to both alert drivers and calm speeds. As the statewide Canalway Trail is further developed west of this location bicycle and pedestrian traffic at this crossing will increase significantly.
Project elements may include modifications to the trail approaches to the intersection, trail alignment modifications, signage improvements, and/or solar powered radio controlled crossing alert system. No drainage improvements, utility relocation, curbing, or culvert installation or replacement is anticipated.
The project budget for design and construction including construction inspection is $148,000. The anticipated start date of preliminary design is April 2013.
The consultant will be required to coordinate design development with the NYS Department of Transportation and to comply with applicable design standards. Since the project is funded with CMAQ funds, construction must be obligated by September 2014.
