The Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth is requesting proposals from municipalities or qualified non-profit agencies for “Sports Opportunity” funding to support programs for Wayne County youth between the ages of 6-17. These awards are designed to promote positive youth development and family engagement. Sports improve the lives of young people by promoting positive social, emotional, health and educational outcomes and have important life –long impacts. The target population includes: under resourced communities, or groups with high rates of homelessness, “low income areas”, community or groups with higher barriers to participation in sports such as youth with disabilities, girls, transgender/ non-binary, gay, lesbian, and questioning identified youth, federally or NY state recognized tribes and tribal organizations, neighborhoods that experience higher crime and violence rates and poorer performing school districts.
All awards are appropriated by the Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth and awarded to local applicants serving children between the ages of 6-17 in under resourced communities. Wayne County is encouraging a wide and flexible definition of sports that can include any organized activity with movement, including physical fitness activities including but not limited to yoga, hiking, dance, or any active outdoors activity.
